PART 4: The House of Cards

The following morning, the financial world woke up to a seismic shock.

The front page of the Financial Times and every major gossip blog featured the same headline: BELL MERIDIAN CEO OUSTED IN SCANDAL: MISTRESS ARRESTED AT GALA. The stock of Bell Meridian actually surged by 4% when the board officially announced Caroline Bell was stepping in as Interim CEO to stabilize the company.

Graham spent the night in a $60-a-night motel on the edge of the city, paying in cash from his wallet. He paced the stained carpet, calling every ally, every board member, and every friend he had made over the last decade.

No one answered. Privilege is a rented commodity, and Graham's lease had expired.

Desperation drove him to the one place he thought he still had leverage: Madison. He needed her to take the fall for the forged marital documents. If he could convince her to plead guilty to the theft and the corporate fraud, claiming she manipulated him, he might avoid prison.

He managed to borrow a phone and called the precinct, pretending to be her attorney. But Madison was already sitting in a room with a public defender and a prosecutor.

"He forged the documents," Madison said coldly, her eyes hard as stone. The naive, ambitious girl from the gala was gone, replaced by a woman fighting for survival. "Graham Bell forged Caroline’s signature to transfer $12 million from her family's trust into a shell company in the Cayman Islands. He told me it was his money. He lied."

The prosecutor raised an eyebrow. "And you have proof of this, Ms. Vale?"

Madison reached into her coat pocket and pulled out a sleek silver flash drive. "I handled all of his private correspondences. I was his brand consultant, remember? I have every email, every audio recording, and every IP log. I'll give you everything on him, but I want full immunity for the embezzlement, and the theft charges dropped."

While Graham and Madison turned into wild animals tearing each other apart to survive, Caroline sat in the sunlit study of her grandmother's estate, sipping Earl Grey tea.

Her lead attorney, David Hirsch, sat across from her, reviewing the morning’s events.

"It’s playing out exactly as you predicted, Caroline," David said, an amused smile on his face. "Graham is trying to pin the forgery on Madison, and Madison just handed the District Attorney the flash drive with Graham's offshore accounts."

Caroline gently set her antique teacup on the saucer. "When you put two rats in a cage with no food, they don't team up to build a key, David. They eat each other."

"The District Attorney is preparing an arrest warrant for Graham as we speak," David confirmed. "Corporate fraud, grand larceny, and forgery. He's looking at a minimum of ten years."

"Good," Caroline said softly, looking out the window at the sprawling gardens. "But we aren't finished yet. I want him to understand exactly who beat him."
