Part 3: The Unraveling Mask

In the cold glow of the monitoring room, Emiliano’s knuckles turned white as he gripped the edge of the desk. The silence in the room was deafening, broken only by the steady, shallow breaths of his head of security standing by the door.

On the screen, Patricia paced the living room. The elegant, soft-spoken woman who had charmed her way into his life and his home was completely gone. In her place was a tyrant, pacing her newfound kingdom.

“You think because he’s wrapped around my finger, you two matter?” Patricia hissed at the girls, who were now huddled together on the edge of the sofa. “In six months, we’ll be married. And the first thing I’m doing is sending both of you to that boarding school in Switzerland. I will not have my new life ruined by two whiny, ungrateful brats.”

Daniela, the older sister, put a protective arm around Martina. She didn’t cry. She had clearly learned that crying only made it worse.

Emiliano felt a physical pain in his chest. A sharp, twisting agony of guilt. How long? How long had his daughters been living in a war zone while he sat at the head of the dinner table, completely blind?

Rosa, still standing nearby, finally stepped forward. She didn’t raise her voice. She didn't break her professional posture. But her tone was unyielding.

“Miss Patricia, the girls need to get ready for their afternoon tutoring,” Rosa said softly. “I will take them upstairs.”

Patricia sneered, stepping into Rosa’s personal space. “You’ll take them when I say you can take them. You’re the help, Rosa. Don't ever forget that. You are nothing but dirt on the floor of this house. A temporary fixture I am about to replace.”

Rosa met Patricia’s eyes. She didn’t flinch. She didn’t cower. She simply extended a hand toward the girls. “Come, Daniela. Martina. Let’s go read.”

As the girls scurried past Patricia and clung to Rosa’s apron, Emiliano watched the housekeeper guide them away with a gentle, protective touch. Rosa wasn't just doing a job. She was the only shield his daughters had.
