PART 4: The Illusions of Power

I stood up from the terminal, letting the screen dim behind me. "Obsolete is a dangerous word, Julian. Often, the things we think are dead are simply waiting."
Julian laughed, a sharp, barking sound that echoed off the concrete walls. He stepped into the room, his demeanor shifting from arrogant doctor to predatory abuser. The mask was completely off now.
"I know what you're doing, Evelyn. You think you're clever, sneaking around, whispering to Chloe. Did you see the bruises? Good. Then you know exactly what happens to people who don't follow my rules." He walked closer, stopping just a foot away from me, trying to use his height to intimidate me. "Let me make this entirely clear to you. I own this hospital. The police chief plays golf with me every Sunday. The mayor is funding his reelection with my donations. If you try to take Chloe away from me, I will destroy her reputation, I will take total custody of that child, and you will never see either of them again. And if you push me... well, old women have strokes all the time."
I looked at him. I looked at his expensive watch, his perfectly styled hair, and the cruel smirk on his lips. I felt no fear. Only a profound sense of pity for how utterly stupid he was.
"You think you're the first man to mistake power for safety?" I asked softly.
"I don't think, I know," Julian sneered. "Now, get out of my hospital before I have security drag you out in handcuffs."
"It's not your hospital, Julian," I said, my voice barely above a whisper, yet it filled the room with an undeniable weight. "It never was."
Right on cue, the PA system throughout the building crackled to life. A robotic, automated voice began repeating a phrase that Julian had likely never heard in his entire career.
"Code Grey. Administrative Lockdown. All personnel report to your stations. External communications suspended."
Julian frowned, his hand instinctively reaching for his smartphone. The screen was dead. No signal. "What is this? A drill?"
Suddenly, the heavy steel door of the archive room burst open. Two men in dark suits, bearing federal badges from the Office of Medical Quality and Compliance, stepped inside. Behind them stood Arthur Pendelton, looking pale but resolute.
"Dr. Julian Thorne?" Arthur said, his voice echoing in the small room. "By order of the State Medical Board and the Federal Department of Health, your medical license is hereby provisionally suspended effective immediately. Furthermore, a federal warrant has been issued for your immediate arrest."

Julian froze, the smirk vanishing from his face, replaced by a mask of pure disbelief. "Are you insane, Arthur? I made you! I contributed half a million dollars to your department's research wing!"
"And you logged those contributions using funds stolen from the oncology department's pharmaceutical registry," I said, stepping out from behind the terminal. "Every dollar has been traced, Julian. Every saline injection you gave to a dying cancer patient to pay for your yachts has been documented. It's all gone."
