Part 6: The Setup

The weeks that followed were a blur of meticulous planning. Hannah stayed in a nearby motel, using the skills she had learned in her accounting courses to decrypt the files on the USB drive. She needed to be sure. She didn't want to just expose the company; she wanted to dismantle the entire network of corruption that had poisoned their town and their family.

Every evening, Frank would come to the motel. They didn't talk about the past. They talked about the evidence. He brought her internal memos, shift logs, and inventory reports from the factory—data that, when paired with the documents from the USB drive, created an ironclad case of corporate malfeasance.

Diane was the bridge. She brought food, clothes for Owen, and snippets of conversation from the neighborhood. She learned that the town had been suffering from high rates of mysterious illnesses—the very things Hannah had suspected were linked to the water.

"Why didn't anyone notice?" Diane asked one night.

"Because they were paid not to," Hannah replied. "And because people like Gary know exactly how to gaslight a community."

Owen, meanwhile, had begun to see the transformation in his grandfather. Frank, once a cold, distant figure in his mother's stories, was now a man haunted by regret and driven by a desperate need for redemption. He played catch with Owen in the park, telling him stories about the stars, trying to fill the void of the father he never knew.

"You're a good man, Grandpa," Owen said one evening.

Frank stopped, his heart aching. "I'm trying to be, son. I'm trying to be."
