Part 18: The Inheritance

On Maya’s twenty-fifth birthday, Edward asked to meet her at the brownstone where the original photograph had been taken — the same steps where Lin, Edward, and baby Maya had once sat.
He brought a small, wrapped box.
Inside was a set of keys and a letter.
Edward
“The brownstone belonged to your mother’s old landlord. I bought it two years ago. I’ve been restoring it quietly. It’s yours now. If you want it.”
Maya stared at the keys.
Maya
“Why?”
Edward
“Because your mother built a life in places like this. Because I took so much from her. And because I want you to have something that’s truly yours — not something I gave you out of guilt, but something that connects you to her.”
Maya ran her thumb over the old brass key.
Maya
“I don’t know if I can accept this.”
Edward
“You don’t have to decide today. Just know it’s there. No strings. No expectations.”
Maya looked up at the building. The windows had been replaced. The facade had been cleaned. But the soul of it — the narrow steps, the way the light hit the front door in the late afternoon — still felt like something her mother would have loved.
Maya
“I’ll think about it.”
May you like
Edward nodded.
Edward
“That’s all I ask.”
