Part 5: The Offer

Three months after the first coffee, Edward made another offer.
This time, it wasn’t money.
He invited Maya to work as a photographer for Harrington Capital’s upcoming annual report and charity gala. The pay was generous, but more importantly, it was legitimate work — the kind of high-profile assignment that could open doors for her photography career.
Maya almost refused.
But then she thought about the months of struggling to pay rent while trying to build her portfolio. She thought about how many doors had already closed because she didn’t have the right connections.
She accepted.
The first assignment was to photograph the Harrington family foundation’s scholarship recipients. Maya spent three days traveling between schools and community centers, taking portraits of students who reminded her of herself at their age — bright, hungry, and carrying more responsibility than they should.
On the third day, she received a message from Vivienne.
Vivienne
“I saw the photos you took yesterday. They’re beautiful. You have your mother’s eye.”
Maya stared at the message for a long time before replying.
Maya
“Thank you.”

It was the first time Vivienne had reached out to her directly since their lunch.
Something small but important had shifted again.
