Part 8: The Choice

A year after the gala, Maya received an offer that changed everything.
A prestigious photography fellowship in London wanted to feature her work. It was the kind of opportunity she had dreamed about for years — full funding, gallery exhibitions, and connections that could launch her career internationally.
She told Edward about it over dinner.
He was quiet for a long time.
Edward
“Are you going to take it?”
Maya looked at him.
Maya
“I don’t know yet. Part of me wants to. Another part of me feels like I’m just starting to understand what it means to have you in my life. Leaving now feels… complicated.”
Edward nodded slowly.
Edward
“I won’t ask you to stay. That wouldn’t be fair. But I will say this — whatever you decide, I’ll support it. Even if it means watching you build a life on another continent.”
Maya studied him.
Maya
“You’ve changed.”
Edward smiled faintly.
Edward
“I’m trying to. Every day.”
Two weeks later, Maya made her decision.
She accepted the fellowship.
But before she left, she did something she had been avoiding for over a year.
She went to her mother’s grave.
She placed fresh flowers on the headstone and sat on the grass for a long time.
Maya (softly)
“I found him, Mom. He’s not who I expected. But he’s trying. And I think… I think I’m going to be okay.”
She touched the headstone one last time.

Maya
“I love you. I’ll carry you with me.”
Then she stood up, wiped her eyes, and walked away.
