Part 6: The Fracture

The first real crack in Edward’s carefully managed new reality came from an unexpected place.
A gossip website published an article titled:
“The Harrington Heir No One Knew About: Inside the Billionaire’s Secret Daughter”
The article was mostly speculation and old photographs of Edward from the late 90s. But it included one detail that hit Maya like a physical blow.
Someone had found Lin Chen’s old photography studio records. They mentioned a generous anonymous donation made twenty-three years ago — the exact amount of the check Edward had given Lin.
The article framed it as Edward trying to “buy silence.”
Maya read the article twice.
Then she called Edward.
Maya
“Did you leak this?”
Edward sounded genuinely shocked.
Edward
“No. Of course not. Why would I—”
Maya
“Because now everyone thinks my mother took money to disappear. That she was paid off.”
Her voice cracked on the last word.
Edward
“Maya, I swear to you—”
Maya
“I need space.”
She hung up before he could answer.
For the next two weeks, she ignored his calls and messages. She threw herself into work, taking every catering shift she could get and avoiding anything that reminded her of the Harrington name.
During those two weeks, something unexpected happened.
Vivienne showed up at her apartment door one evening with takeout from the Vietnamese restaurant in Queens.
Vivienne
“I’m not here on Edward’s behalf. I’m here because I remember what it felt like to be attacked by the press when I first married into this family. And because I was cruel to you once, and I’d rather not repeat that mistake.”
Maya let her in.
They ate in silence for a while.
Then Vivienne spoke.
Vivienne
“He didn’t leak it. I had Thomas look into it. It was one of the waitstaff from the gala who recognized you and sold the story.”
Maya didn’t respond.
Vivienne
“But that doesn’t matter as much as how you feel. You have every right to be angry. At the article. At Edward. At me.”
She paused.
Vivienne
“Just don’t disappear completely. Your mother sent you to find him for a reason. Don’t let strangers take that away from you.”
Maya looked at her for a long time.
Then she nodded once.
May you like
It wasn’t forgiveness.
But it was a beginning.
