Part 29: The Full Circle

On what would have been Lin Chen’s fifty-fifth birthday, Maya held a small exhibition in the brownstone.

She displayed photographs of her mother’s life — old images Lin had taken, new ones Maya had taken of the places her mother had loved, and several portraits of Edward from different stages of his life.

Edward, Vivienne, Thomas, William, and Eleanor all attended.

At the end of the evening, Maya stood in front of everyone and spoke.

Maya
“My mother never wanted revenge. She never wanted money or status. She just wanted me to know where I came from. She wanted me to have the choice she never had — to decide for myself who my family would be.”

She looked at Edward.

Maya
“I chose to let you in. And I’m glad I did.”

Then she looked at Vivienne.

Maya
“I chose to let you try. And you did.”

Finally, she looked at Thomas and William.

Maya
“I chose to stay, even when it was hard. And I’m still here.”

She raised her glass.

Maya
“To the family we chose. And to the mother who made sure I had the chance to choose.”

May you like

Everyone raised their glasses.

For the first time, it felt like they were truly one family — not perfect, not without scars, but real.
