Part 19: The Reckoning

Thomas’s resentment finally reached a breaking point during a family dinner.

After too much wine, he stood up and looked directly at Maya.

Thomas
“You know what the worst part is? It’s not even that you exist. It’s that Father looks at you like you’re proof he can still be redeemed. Like having you here fixes everything he broke. But it doesn’t. It just makes the rest of us feel like we were never enough.”

The table went completely silent.

Maya set her fork down carefully.

Maya
“I never asked to fix anything. And I never asked to be anyone’s redemption story.”

She stood up.

Maya
“I came here because my mother wanted me to know my father. That’s it. If that threatens you, Thomas, that’s your problem. Not mine.”

She looked at Edward.

Maya
“I’m going home. Thank you for dinner.”

She walked out before anyone could stop her.

Edward found her two hours later, sitting on the steps of the brownstone he had given her the keys to. She hadn’t gone inside yet.

Edward sat down beside her without speaking.

After a long silence, Maya said quietly:

Maya
“I don’t want to be the reason your family falls apart.”

Edward looked at her.

Edward
“You’re not. Thomas is struggling with his own demons. That’s not your burden to carry.”

Maya leaned her head against the railing.

Maya
“I just wanted to know where I came from. I didn’t want to destroy anything.”

May you like

Edward was quiet for a moment.

Edward
“You didn’t destroy anything, Maya. You revealed what was already cracked. And maybe that’s not such a bad thing.”
