Part 12: The Betrayal Within

While working with Agent Reynolds to neutralize the threat outside our perimeter, I discovered a far more devastating truth hidden within the encrypted logs of my own command. My residence wasn't just being watched by the Prescotts; it was being tracked by the Department of Defense.

"Major Jenkins," I said, meeting her in a pre-arranged, secure park miles from our mountain safehouse. The sky was overcast, matching the grim tension in my chest. "I need to know who has access to my current operational status. My location has been compromised."

Sarah Jenkins, usually the picture of professional composure, looked pained. She hesitated, her eyes darting around the empty park before she leaned in. "Colonel, it goes much higher than a mere tactical leak. I did some digging into the unauthorized pings on your secure comms. They aren't coming from the Prescotts."

My blood ran cold. "Explain."

"It’s General Halloway," she whispered, the name hanging in the air like a death sentence. "He’s been a long-time acquaintance of the Prescott patriarch, dating back to their time at the Academy. He’s been feeding your coordinates to their security firm. He’s the one who initiated the 'observation' protocols, trying to paint you as a rogue asset who needs to be 'reined in'."

The betrayal stung more than the physical threats from the Prescott thugs. My own institution, the military machine I had dedicated thirty years of my life to—the entity that had been my moral compass and my family—was being manipulated by the very corruption I was fighting. I realized then that I couldn't rely on the chain of command anymore. The hierarchy I had respected my entire career had become a weaponized tool for my enemies.

"Does he know I’ve found him?" I asked, my voice devoid of emotion.

"Not yet," Sarah replied. "But he’s accelerating the timeline. They’re planning to issue a recall order for you, under the guise of an 'emergency audit' of your unit’s history. Once you’re back on base, they’ll strip your rank and bury the evidence you have."

I stared at her, the reality of the situation crystallizing. I was no longer a Colonel serving her country; I was a marked target of the very system I had sworn to protect. To stay in the light was to be destroyed. To survive, I had to do the unthinkable.

"I’m going dark, Sarah," I said.

She nodded slowly, understanding the gravity of the decision. "If you do this, there is no coming back. You will be declared AWOL. Your pension, your legacy, your rank—everything you’ve built will be wiped from the records."

"It was already gone the moment I chose my daughter over their corruption," I said, turning away. "Take care of yourself, Major. Don't look for me."

I walked back to my vehicle, my mind racing. I wasn't just fighting a family anymore; I was fighting the shadow of a system that protected its own at the cost of the truth. I arrived back at the safehouse, where Emily was waiting, unaware that our world had just shrunk to a single, fragile point of safety.

"Everything okay, Mom?" she asked, looking up from a book.

I looked at my daughter, the reason for my entire life’s work. I realized then that my identity as a Colonel was just a skin I had shed. I was a mother, and I would burn the entire system to the ground before I let them touch her.

"Everything is fine, honey," I said, my voice steady. "But we have a new mission. And this one is not authorized by anyone but us."

I started gathering our gear, not into military-issued rucksacks, but into nondescript bags. We were becoming ghosts. As the sun dipped below the mountain peaks, I did one last check of the perimeter. The black sedan was still there, parked on the shoulder of the road. I stood in the dark, watching them, knowing they were watching me.

They thought they had trapped a soldier. They had no idea they had just unleashed a force they couldn't possibly account for. The betrayal had stripped away my last obligation to the status quo. Now, there were no rules, no bureaucracy, and no chain of command to hold me back. Only the mission. And the mission was us.
