The trial didn't end in a day, but the tide had irrevocably turned. The Prescotts’ empire crumbled under the weight of the investigation. By the end of the year, both Ethan and Brandon were facing significant prison time, and Margaret was stripped of the social standing she had built her life around.
We returned to our life, but it was different now. The fear that had once defined our days was gone, replaced by a quiet, resilient strength.
I sat on the porch of our new home, the sunset casting a warm glow over the yard. Emily walked out, holding two cups of coffee. She sat down next to me, and for a long time, we just watched the light change.
"You really did it, Mom," she said, her voice filled with pride.
"We did it, Emily," I corrected, putting an arm around her. "You were the one who had the courage to hit that button on your watch. You were the one who stood up for yourself."
