Part 15: A Shadow in the Crowd

By the time Victoria turned four, she was a bright, talkative little girl with Elena’s sharp, observant eyes. Elena did her best to shield her daughter from the paparazzi, but as the chairwoman of a global empire, certain public appearances were unavoidable.
The Vale Foundation was opening a brand-new public library and community center in the heart of the city’s working-class district—the very district where Diane and Vanessa now lived. Elena arrived in her armored Maybach, flanked by Andre and a tight security detail.
The crowd was massive. Local families, children holding small flags, and reporters lined the steps of the beautiful stone building. Elena stepped out, holding Victoria’s hand. The little girl waved cheerfully at the crowd, her laughter ringing out over the clicking of cameras.
As Elena walked up the steps, greeting local officials, her eyes swept over the crowd.
Deep in the back, standing behind the metal barricades, a woman stood frozen.
It was Diane Whitmore.
She was wearing a cheap, worn winter coat that looked two sizes too big. Her face was lined with deep wrinkles, her hands tucked into her pockets to hide the rough skin caused by years of manual labor. She was staring at Victoria.

For a split second, Diane’s eyes met Elena’s. There was no rage left in Diane’s gaze. There was no arrogance. There was only a profound, crushing despair—the look of a woman who realized she had thrown away her family’s salvation because she couldn't recognize a queen when she sat at her table.
Elena didn't break her stride. She didn't smile, and she didn't frown. She looked right through Diane as if she were nothing more than a ghost, turning her attention back to her daughter, who was happily pulling on her hand.
