The definitive closure of the Whitmore files did not bring a stagnant peace; it brought an era of absolute dominance. By the time Victoria turned twenty, the global energy grid was almost entirely controlled by Aureum Dominion. Elena, now transitioning into an advisory role, spent most of her time at her coastal estate. Yet, the past had a strange way of leaving microscopic echoes.

Mara walked onto the sun-drenched terrace one morning, an unusual look of curiosity on her face. "Elena, an automated notification just triggered from the state department of corrections. Grant Whitmore has completed his mandated restitution labor."

Elena didn't look up from her morning tea. "Completed? The debt was over fifty million dollars."

"He didn't pay it off," Mara clarified, sliding a digital report onto the table. "He passed away last night from sudden cardiac arrest in his sleep at the Ohio facility housing complex. Because he had no living family members willing to claim him, the state is preparing to bury him in a potter's field."

Elena paused, her eyes tracing the horizon where the ocean met the sky. For a split second, the image of a young, arrogant man in a tailored suit laughing at a dinner table flashed through her mind. Now, he was just a nameless ledger entry being deleted by a computer script.

"Let the state handle it according to standard protocol," Elena said, her voice completely smooth, devoid of any malice or pity. "Aureum will not claim the body. He spent his life paying for his choices. The debt is settled."
